Perplexity Computer: what it can do and where it falls short

Perplexity Computer orchestrates 19 AI models to run complete workflows. What the AI agent delivers, what it costs, and where the catches are.

Using different AI capabilities today, from research and data analysis to a finished presentation, usually means switching between several specialized tools and losing context with every switch. Perplexity Computer promises to solve exactly this: a single system that orchestrates 19 specialized AI models and runs complete workflows autonomously.

Claude Opus 4.6 handles the central coordination, while models such as Gemini, ChatGPT 5.2, and GPT 5.3 Codex each take on the subtasks they are best suited for.

But what does this mean for your company in practice? And where are the catches that Perplexity would rather not talk about?

Perplexity Computer – as of April 2026

Status:

  • Perplexity Computer has been available since February 25, 2026, and is included only in the top subscription tier (Max)
  • On March 11, 2026, Perplexity announced the Enterprise extension, with SSO, audit logging, and compliance features
  • Announced at the same time: “Personal Computer”, a device based on the Mac mini for running locally
  • No documented GDPR audit by an EU data protection authority. For Consumer Max users, data is used for AI training by default (you have to opt out)
  • According to early adopters, integration reliability is still inconsistent
  • Ongoing copyright lawsuits against Perplexity over its content-sourcing practices are an additional risk factor

What is Perplexity Computer?

Perplexity Computer is a cloud-based AI agent that runs complete workflows autonomously. You describe the outcome you want in plain language; the system breaks your instruction down into subtasks and assigns each one, in parallel, to the best-suited AI model. Everything runs in a managed cloud sandbox, so tasks keep going after you close the browser and can run for hours or even weeks if needed.

How it differs from the alternatives:

→ Claude Cowork (Anthropic) runs locally on your machine and uses only Anthropic’s own models, but in return it is significantly cheaper.

→ OpenClaw is free and open source, but it needs a technical setup and raises questions about data protection and security.

→ Perplexity Computer is the only option that automatically orchestrates 19 models from different providers and runs entirely in the cloud, with no setup.

What is Perplexity Computer good for?

Parallel deep research with automatic synthesis

Anyone who does extensive research on a regular basis knows the problem: you work through sources one after another, lose the overview, and miss contradictions between results.

Perplexity Computer runs up to 7 search types at once (web, academic databases, people, images, videos, shopping, and social media). It reads the full source pages and flags contradictions between sources automatically.

In a mid-sized company, it might look like this: your product manager commissions a market analysis for a new product segment, goes into a meeting, and comes back to a structured report with source references, comparison tables, and identified knowledge gaps.

Automated competitive analysis with a finished report

“Research our top 5 competitors, compare their pricing, create a slide deck, and email it to the team.” A single prompt like this sets off the entire process. Perplexity Computer runs parallel web searches, builds comparison tables, generates a PPTX file, and sends it from the connected email account.

If public prices are missing, as on “Contact Sales” pages, the system flags the gap instead of guessing. Companies used to spending hours gathering competitor data by hand get finished deliverables instead of raw data.

Financial analysis and dashboards

Perplexity Computer has direct access to more than 40 live data tools that draw on SEC filings, FactSet, S&P Global, and other sources. No additional license or API key is required. The system can build interactive dashboards, Excel models, and complete financial applications, with every figure traceable to its source.

For finance and controlling teams, this means comparison dashboards can be built quickly without expensive specialist tools.

An important caveat: The financial data tools focus mainly on Anglo-American sources (SEC filings, S&P Global). For purely German mid-sized companies without international financial data needs, this use case may matter less.

Automated multi-tool workflows (Slack, email, CRM)

Perplexity Computer connects to tools such as Gmail, Outlook, GitHub, Slack, Notion, Salesforce, and more than 400 other apps. A single prompt can trigger research, analysis, document creation, sending an email, and a scheduled follow-up.

In an enterprise setting, you can address @computer directly in Slack channels. The system can monitor email, calendar, and files and take proactive actions such as morning briefings.

Caution is warranted here, though: according to early adopters, integration quality is inconsistent. One developer reports that OAuth tokens expire with every session and that access problems with personal workspaces occur even after successful authentication (according to the community). Test each integration on its own before you build critical workflows on it.

Our assessment

Where it pays off

Perplexity Computer solves a real problem: instead of switching between five tools, you describe the outcome and get a finished deliverable.

For teams of 10–20 people or more with regular research, analysis, and reporting needs, the time savings can be substantial.

Perplexity Computer fits into your existing infrastructure, especially if you already use Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, or Slack.

And for companies without a technical team, the zero-setup approach is a clear advantage over self-hosted solutions such as OpenClaw.

Where it is the wrong choice

Computer is not suitable for companies with sensitive data that are not on the Enterprise plan. On the Consumer Max plan, data is used for AI training by default, and there is no official GDPR audit by an EU authority.

Credit consumption is just as problematic, because it is unpredictable. Teams with a fixed AI budget will find it hard to plan, since credits can disappear quickly on complex tasks.

Finally, there is little visibility into running tasks. Unlike Manus AI, there is no real-time replay of the agent’s actions. If something goes wrong, all you can do is rephrase and hope.

Lucid Labs recommendation

If you want to try Perplexity Computer, we recommend a pilot with a limited budget. Start with clearly defined research and analysis tasks, test integrations one at a time, and learn how many credits your typical workflows consume before you build critical processes on it.

The product has only been on the market since February 2026, and it still shows. Many of today’s weaknesses, particularly connector reliability, are solvable engineering problems, however. Until Perplexity Computer matures, keep Claude Cowork in mind as a cheaper alternative for cost-conscious teams.

Current prices are listed on Perplexity’s official pricing page and on its Enterprise pricing page.

FAQ

Can Perplexity Computer be used without technical know-how?

Yes. Perplexity Computer is designed as a zero-setup solution: you describe the outcome in plain language, and the system handles planning and execution. There is no software to install and no development environment to configure. That said, early adopters report that some integrations (such as GitHub and Vercel) may need manual workarounds, which does require some basic technical understanding.

How secure is company data with Perplexity Computer?

Perplexity is SOC 2 Type II compliant and claims GDPR and PCI DSS compliance. High-stakes actions such as financial transactions or external communication require explicit approval from the user.

One important distinction from other tools: on the Enterprise plan, customer data is not used for model training. On the Consumer Max plan, data use for AI training is switched on by default. No official GDPR audit by an EU authority is documented.

How does Perplexity Computer differ from Claude Cowork or OpenClaw?

Perplexity Computer orchestrates 19 models from different providers in the cloud, with no setup. Claude Cowork uses only Anthropic models, runs locally on your own machine, and is significantly cheaper. OpenClaw is free and open source and offers maximum customizability, but it requires a technical setup and ongoing maintenance.

How predictable are the monthly costs of Perplexity Computer?

Not very. Perplexity does not publish a detailed table of credit consumption, and consumption varies widely with task complexity, the number of sub-agents involved, and iterations. You can set spending limits to avoid runaway costs. Our advice: start with small test tasks to understand how many credits your typical workflows use before you scale.
