ChatGPT Enterprise: what the tool can do and who it really pays off for

AI at work. What sounded like an experiment two years ago is everyday operations in 2026. Many mid-sized companies face a specific problem: employees have long been using ChatGPT privately for work tasks, without oversight and with an open data protection risk. ChatGPT Enterprise is OpenAI’s answer.

ChatGPT Enterprise, as of February 2026

  • GPT-5.2 is rolling out to Enterprise workspaces in early access. Admins can switch the model on in the workspace settings.
  • On February 13, 2026, older models (GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, o4-mini, GPT-5 Instant/Thinking) will be removed from ChatGPT.
  • Inference is not processed entirely in Europe. Authentication, routing, and analytics may take place outside the selected region.
  • New: the OpenAI Compliance Logs Platform lets you export audit, authentication, and usage logs.
  • “ChatGPT Team” was renamed “ChatGPT Business” in August 2025 and remains available as a separate, lower-barrier plan.

What is ChatGPT Enterprise?

ChatGPT Enterprise uses the same GPT models as the consumer version, but runs them in an isolated environment with strict data boundaries. Company data remains the customer’s property, and OpenAI does not train on business data or conversations. Custom GPTs, more than 60 app connectors, and an admin console connect the general-purpose AI model to the company’s own context.

Microsoft 365 Copilot is deeply embedded in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint but stays tied to the Microsoft ecosystem. ChatGPT Enterprise, by contrast, is platform-independent: it connects to Google Workspace, Salesforce, GitHub, Atlassian, and many other tools.

The drawback: ChatGPT Enterprise is primarily a chat interface. Its output is mostly text, whereas Copilot works directly inside Office documents.

What is ChatGPT Enterprise good for?

Making company knowledge searchable with app connectors

At most companies, information is spread across half a dozen tools. ChatGPT Enterprise connects to more than 60 business apps, including Gmail, Outlook, Google Drive, SharePoint, Slack, GitHub, HubSpot, and Jira.

Employees can ask questions across all of these sources, for example: “Create a Q4 overview based on the sales figures in HubSpot and the project status in Jira.” That ends the constant switching between tools. The Atlassian connector even supports write actions, such as creating Jira issues straight from the chat.

Data analysis and reporting without specialist software

With the built-in “Advanced Data Analysis” feature, employees upload Excel or CSV files directly into the chat and ask questions in plain language. A controller uploads the quarterly figures and asks: “Show me how costs have developed by department, as a chart.”

The result is charts and summaries in seconds, with no specialist BI knowledge required. Business departments can run ad hoc analyses on their own. OpenAI puts the time saved at 40 to 60 minutes per user per day (according to the vendor, not independently verified).

Deep Research: automated market and competitor research

Deep Research lets ChatGPT browse dozens of websites autonomously and asynchronously, then deliver structured reports with source references. For example: “Research the top 5 competitors in market segment X, analyze their pricing strategies, and summarize their recent product launches.”

For sales and strategy teams that regularly need market intelligence, this cuts manual research from days to hours. The feature can also be combined with the connected apps to analyze internal and external sources at the same time.

Standardized workflows with Custom GPTs and templates

Companies build task-specific AI assistants (Custom GPTs) with their own instructions and data access, and publish them internally through an app store-style system. HR builds a “candidate screening GPT”, and marketing a “social media generator” that follows the brand guidelines. Chat templates can be shared across the whole organization.

For companies with several departments, this safeguards quality and consistency. Training effort goes down, because employees can use preconfigured assistants right away instead of writing their own prompts.

Our assessment

Where it pays off

ChatGPT Enterprise pays off for companies with roughly 150 employees or more that already have unmanaged ChatGPT use in-house and want to bring it under control. If you run a mixed tool landscape (Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 and Atlassian), you benefit from its cross-platform connectivity, which is a genuine advantage over Microsoft Copilot. The large context window of 128K to 400K tokens also matters for companies that handle a lot of text, such as daily reports, contracts, or customer correspondence.

Where it is the wrong choice

  • For mid-sized companies with 20 to 100 employees, ChatGPT Business (formerly Team) is the better choice. It offers the same models on a self-service basis, with no sales process, from two users upward. If you need AI directly inside documents and spreadsheets rather than in a separate chat window, Microsoft 365 Copilot will serve you better. ChatGPT Enterprise remains primarily a chat interface; working on documents means exporting and importing them.

  • Data residency also calls for precision. Customer content can be stored in Europe, but inference is not processed entirely in Europe. For companies with the strictest requirements on where data is processed, such as in certain parts of the finance or healthcare sector, that may not be enough.

  • In practice, “unlimited” means “fair use”. OpenAI reserves the right to throttle extreme usage. Hallucinations remain a risk. For business-critical applications in legal, finance, or compliance, a human must review every output.

Lucid Labs recommendation

For a typical mid-sized German company with 50 to 200 employees, we recommend starting with ChatGPT Business: the same models, self-service, no sales process, and a much faster start. ChatGPT Enterprise only becomes worthwhile once you genuinely need the extended admin controls (SCIM, RBAC, SSO), European data residency, or the shared credit pool at contract level.

What sets ChatGPT Enterprise apart is that it is currently the most platform-independent enterprise AI tool on the market. If you do not work exclusively in the Microsoft ecosystem, it gives you more flexibility than Copilot.

FAQ

What is the difference between ChatGPT Business and ChatGPT Enterprise?

ChatGPT Business (formerly “Team”) is available on a self-service basis from two users and gives access to the same models. Enterprise adds European data residency, SCIM provisioning, RBAC, extended admin controls, SSO, domain verification, zero data retention, and a shared credit pool at contract level. Enterprise requires going through OpenAI’s sales team. Current prices and plan comparisons are on the official pricing page.

Is company data used to train the AI models?

No. With Enterprise, OpenAI does not train on business data or conversations. All conversations are encrypted in transit and at rest. Enterprise customers can configure zero data retention to stop OpenAI from storing anything at all. ChatGPT Enterprise is SOC 2 Type 2 compliant.

Can data be stored in Europe?

Yes. Enterprise customers can choose to have their customer content stored in Europe (data residency). Inference residency is also available to eligible customers. One important caveat: processing that does not run on GPUs (authentication, routing, analytics) may still take place outside Europe. OpenAI complies with the SOC 2, ISO/IEC 27001, and CSA STAR standards.

Which business tools can ChatGPT Enterprise connect to?

More than 60 app connectors are available, including Slack, Google Drive, SharePoint, Gmail, Outlook, GitHub, Atlassian (Jira, Confluence), HubSpot, Dropbox, and Box. Companies can build their own custom apps using the Model Context Protocol (MCP), and Zapier opens up thousands of further integrations.
